Tant dans la musique vocale qu’instrumentale, le bourdon peut être alternativement continu et discontinu. Le bourdon continu des flûtes et vièles de guérison évoque celui du simbong. Alors que dans ce dernier le bourdon devient syllabique lors de la récitation des paroles, dans les répertoires instrumentaux, il est discontinu (rythmé), dans des mélodies au tempo rapide.

The drone can be alternately continuous or discontinuous, both in vocal and instrumental music. The continuous drone of the flutes and fiddles of healing recalls that of the simbong. Whereas in the latter the drone becomes syllabic during the recitation of the lyrics, in the instrumental repertoires it is discontinuous (rhythmic) in the rapid tempo melodies. (anglais)

Baik dalam musik vokal maupun instrumental, dengungan kadang-kadang dapat terus-menerus dan kadang-kadang terputus-putus. Dengungan suling-suling dan alat-alat dawai gesek yang terus-menerus mengingatkan kita pada dengungan simbong.
