The peculiarity of the marakka is its pentatonic scale of slendro type (with nearly equal intervals) but broadened towards the hexatonic by using a lower semitone as support. This descending melodic chromaticism musically suggests complaint and lamentation.

La particularité du marakka, c’est son échelle pentatonique de type slendro (équipentatonique à intervalles presque égaux) mais élargie vers l’hexatonique par l’usage du demi-ton inférieur comme point d’appui. Ce chromatisme mélodique descendant suggère musicalement la plainte et la déploration. (French)

Keunikan marakka adalah tangga nada pentatoniknya sejenis slendro (ekuipentatonik dengan interval yang hampir setara), tetapi diperluas ke heksatonik melalui pemakaian setengah nada bawah sebagai titik topang.
