The attacks from above, from below, or by glottal stops enliven the soloist's line. It is not the interval that counts but the way in which the soloist attacks the pitches. The attacks make a kind of scratch at the beginning of each syllable. The soloist approaches each syllable with a leap of a semitone above or below, of third or of fourth. In the example opposite, the melodic motif unrolling over a repeated eight-beat cycle is not identical each time, as the mordents change place.

Ce n’est pas au fond l’intervalle qui compte mais c’est beaucoup plus la façon qu’a le soliste d’attaquer les notes. Les attaques forment des sortes d’éraflures au début de chaque syllabe auxquelles le soliste s’agrippe par saut de tierce ou de quarte. Dans l’exemple ci-dessous, le motif mélodique qui se déroule sur un cycle répété de huit temps n’est pas réitéré de façon identique car les mordants changent de place. Les attaques des notes, par le dessus, par le dessous, au demi-ton, par sauts de tierce ou par coups de glotte, pimentent la ligne du soliste. (French)
