The principle of subordination is obvious: the ‘lieutenants’ depend on their leader; the group is subordinate to the soloist. This subordination accentuates the superiority of the soloist – the only one with the ornamental expertise. A structure of 4+1 or 3+1 or 2+1 is recurrent.
