According to Philip Yampolsky (Music of Indonesia 15: South Sulawesi Strings, 1997: 8), the lutes of South Sulawesi called kacapi (Bugis, Mandar), kacaping (Makassar) and katapi (Toraja) belong to a family of “boat lutes,” most of them with similar names, (e.g., hasapi, sampeq, sapi, konyahpi) found in many parts of western and central Indonesia – as far east as Sumba, but not in Java or Bali. Another member of the family is found in Thailand and Cambodia, where it is called chapei. Yet another, kudyapi, is found in the Philippines. Their curved form gave rise to the descriptive term of ‘boat lutes’.

Ces luths se retrouvent dans les îles extérieures à Java, et ce jusqu’à Sumba. Un autre membre de la famille se trouve en Thaïlande et au Cambodge sous le nom de chapei. Menurut Yampolsky (1997: 8), lut-lut Sulawesi Selatan dinamakan kacapi (Bugis, Mandar), kacaping (Makassar) dan katapi (Toraja), termasuk dalam golongan lut yang tersebar luas di seluruh Nusantara (di Sumatra: hasapi, hapetan, di Kalimantan: sampeq, sapi, konyahpi’, dan kacapi, kacaping, katapi di Sulawesi Selatan). Lut-lut ini terdapat di pulau-pulau di luar Jawa, dan sampai ke Sumba. Bentuknya yang melengkung melahirkan istilah penggambaran lut perahu. (Indonesian)
