The first funeral marks the transformation of the ‘invalid’ – long dead biologically – into a true deceased. It signifies the symbolic death of the body, which only then is turned head downstream and then hung from the ceiling. The second funeral allows the deceased’s shade – represented by an effigy – set off to appear at the home of the dead downstream, accompanied by the riches sacrificed for him during the rituals.
