Before the buffaloes are sacrificed the deceased is considered to be ill. He lies in a West-East position in the house. He is given items to drink, eat, and chew. Once the ritual has begun – at the death of the first buffalo – he is deemed dead. He is then moved into an upstream-downstream position. His shade (bombo) and body separate. A representation of his being will be constructed at the second funeral.

Avant les sacrifices des buffles, le défunt est considéré comme malade. Il repose en position couchant-levant dans la maison. On lui donne à boire, à manger, à chiquer. Après le début du rituel, au sacrifice du premier buffle, il est tenu pour mort. On le déplace alors en position amont-aval. Son ombre (bombo) et son corps se séparent. Une figuration de son être sera construite lors des secondes funérailles. (French)

Sebelum kerbau disembelih, mendiang dianggap sebagai orang sakit. Ia dibaringkan di dalam rumah pada posisi matahari terbenam – matahari terbit. Ia pun diberi makan, minum, dan sirih. Sesudah awal ritus, sesudah kematian kerbau pertama, ia dianggap mati. Dengan demikian, ia pun diletakkan pada posisi hulu – hilir. Roh (bombo) dan tubuhnya terpisah satu sama lain.
