Dans les rites du Levant, au début de chaque rituel, le premier geste consiste à se retourner symboliquement vers le levant en « retournant l’offrande » pembalikan pesungna (Veen 1966 : 6 ; Nooy-Palm 1986 : 152). En guise d’offrande de la viande et du riz cuits sont placés sur une feuille de bananier. La viande est posée en amont, lieu de résidence des dieux et divinités, puis après l’adresse orale, la feuille de bananier est retournée en sens opposé afin de diriger la viande vers l’aval, lieu des ancêtres. Ce geste fondamental, nécessaire pour le passage des ombres d’un monde à l’autre, structure le système de pensée. Aucun rite funéraire ne saurait être achevé sans l’accomplissement de ce rituel.

In the rituals of the East, at the start of every ritual, the action consists of symbolically turning the offering around (pembalikan pesungna) (Veen 1966: 6; Nooy-Palm 1986: 152). The offering consists of placing cooked meat and rice on a banana leaf. The meat is placed upstream, the home of gods and divinities, then after a speech, the banana leaf is turned around in the opposite direction so that the meat is directed downstream, the home of the ancestors. This fundamental act, necessary for the souls’ passage from one world to the other, structures the system of thought. No funeral rite is considered complete until this ritual has been performed. Dalam setiap jenis ritus rampe matallo (“di sebelah matahari terbit”), tindakan pertama yang harus dilakukan pada setiap awalnya adalah berganti arah secara simbolis ke Ufuk Timur dengan “perubahan posisi persembahan” (pembalikan pesungna), Veen, 1966: 6; Nooy-Palm, 1968: 1952. Persembahan tampil dalam bentuk peletakan daging dan nasi di atas selembar daun pisang. Daging ditempatkan pada bagian hulu, tempat bersemayamnya para dewa dan dunia dewata. Tindakan mendasar, yang menentukan dalam peralihan roh-roh dari suatu dunia ke dunia yang lain ini, berfungsi untuk menata sistem berpikir manusia Toraja. Tanpa pelaksanaan ritus ini, sebuah ritus pemakaman tidak akan pernah dapat dianggap tuntas. (indonésien)
