In the house the drum is struck three times to signify illness and then death. The deceased’s son sits facing West and beats with two different rhythms: the rhythm of the ‘lame buffalo’ (digento tedong, Florilegium line 588) means the deceased is ill; and the second ‘being dead’ (dipamate) indicates to the living the being’s real death; however, the physical death has often occurred long before.
