Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Déclamation de Paris

Public

The origins of this public institution go back to the eighteenth century. Starting as two separate institutions (École Royale de Chant et de Déclamation founded in 1783 and École de Musique Municipale in 1792), they were merged and refounded as Conservatoire de Musique in 1795. Between 1806 and 1816 it was named Conservatoire de Musique et de Déclamation. In 1816, after being closed for a few years, it reopened as École Royale de Musique et de Déclamation until 1831, when it went back to Conservatoire de Musique et de Déclamation. It has again changed its name several times since the 1930s, until 2009, when it was renamed Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris as we know it today.

The historical records of the Conservatoire are available at the Archives Nationales de France. The Library collection that belonged to the Conservatoire is available at the Bibliothèque national de France. Some student records are also still available at the CNSMDP.
