The katapi or sudekan is a so-called ‘boat’ lute, plucked, in black wood, with two strings tuned in fourths. The sound box, 100 cm (3 ft 3 inches) by 140 cm (4 ft 7 inches), is pierced with three sound-holes at the back. The fingers rest on finger-posts 3 to 5 cm high. This system of finger-posts is not found in other boat lutes in Indonesia, apart from the Bugis-Makassar kacapi/kacaping, Sumba and the Philippines (the kudyapi).

(Yampolsky, 1997, Music of Indonesia 15: South Sulawesi Strings) (French)

(Indonesian)
