Les Toraja ne classent pas les différents simbong. Ce qui différencie les simbong, c’est le traitement musical de la strophe, car préambule et clausule sont chantés de manière identique dans toutes les régions. Je distingue trois modèles selon la relation entre texte et musique, soit trois types de « syllabisation » : syllabique, neumatique, mélismatique. Si les modèles syllabique et neumatique ne nuisent pas à l’intelligibilité du texte, en revanche, le modèle mélismatique n’en facilite pas la compréhension.

The Toraja do not classify the different simbong. What makes one simbong different from another is the musical treatment of the stanza, as the preamble and clausula are sung in the same way in all regions. I identify three models depending on the relation between text and music, i.e. three types of ‘syllabication’: syllabic, neumatic, and melismatic. While the syllabic and neumatic models do not impair the intelligibility of the text, the melismatic model impedes comprehension. (anglais)

Orang Toraja tidak mengelompokkan simbong dalam bentuk yang beraneka ragam. Yang membuat simbong berbeda satu dengan yang lain adalah perlakuan musikal terhadap bait, karena pengantar dan formula akhir dinyanyikan dengan cara yang serupa di seluruh daerah Toraja. Saya membedakan adanya tiga model menurut hubungan antar naskah dan musik, atau 3 tipe “silabisasi”: silabis, neumatik, dan melismatik. Jika model silabis dan neumatik tidak mengganggu pemahaman naskah, model melismatik justru mempersulitnya. (indonésien)

Enfin, l'exécution se caractérise par des jeux d'intensité noté par les sforzando, noté sfz dans l'exemple ci-dessous Les mélismes ne s'étendant que sur trois temps, et les voyelles tombant sur des temps forts, la parole est encore aisément intelligible., NEUMATIC MODEL. This metric model is recognized through the chorus rising by a whole tone and then returning to the original pitch, creating a polyphonic overlapping (when some singers remain on the raised pitch) at the end giving the effect of a total dilution of the sound in the space. Finally, the performance is characterized by a play of intensity noted by sfz in the example below –with the melismas extending over only three beats, and the vowels falling on strong beats, the words are still easy to understand. Ici, pas de bourdon, la mélodie est assurée non plus par le soliste mais par le chœur qui exécute une mélodie souvent fondée sur des intervalles de seconde et tierce mineure.Propre à la région de Baruppu', ce modèle se caractérise par des paroles chantées à l'unisson sans ornements, par la lenteur, par des pauses, par l'absence de clausule, par des échelles aux chromatismes inhabituels, par des tuilages, par des changements d'échelle et par de longue tenues sur la subfinale., MELISMATIC MODEL. No drone here: the melody is no longer carried by the soloist but by the chorus, who perform a melody often based on intervals of a second and minor third.
