Called the ‘flute bone’, it is made up of two groups of pieces: the ‘flute base’ formed of ‘four bones’ (a'pa' bukunna) or four musical pieces, and the closure (ma'passake) formed also of ‘four bones’. These pieces are divided between the various groups. In each turn, every team plays two or three titles but only the first has to belong to the ‘fundamental’ repertoire. Each of the ‘bones’ should be announced from the first turn by each of the groups; however, this is not always the case. Neither the performance nor the sequencing is fixed in advance. The spirit of these pieces is always the same: slow tempo, languor, strangeness of the tritone intervals, the abrasive minor seconds, a structure in a loop recycling the same cells, and insistent trills. These musical features – slowness, unison, absence of alternating voices, low tessitura – define the idea of the fundamental piece or ‘bone’, but not necessarily the organization of the voices.
