La « règle du retournement » (aluk pembalikan) soutient l’ensemble du système socio-religieux dont la dynamique consiste à « retourner » du couchant vers le levant. La dynamique rituelle consiste à « retourner » (c’est-à-dire à faire passer) un rituel du côté du couchant au côté du levant, d’un point opposé à un autre. Le but ultime de l’aluk pembalikan est le retour du don des morts aux vivants : les vivants donnent de la nourriture cuite aux morts, en retour, les morts rendent aux vivants protection et fécondité. Les relations de la société sont déterminées globalement par ce système d’échange. Note : Hetty Nooy-Palm traduit le terme pembalikan par le terme anglais « conversion » comme « moyen de restaurer les relations avec les dieux du monde supérieur » (Nooy-Palm 1986 : 152-153).

The ‘rule of turnaround’ (aluk pembalikan) upholds the whole socio-religious system of which the dynamic consists in ‘turning around’ from the West to the East. It represents ‘turning around’ (i.e. to pass) a ritual from the side of the West to the side of the East, from one point opposite to another. The ultimate aim of the aluk pembalikan is the return of the deceased’s gift to the living: the living give cooked food to the dead, and in return the dead offer the living protection and fecundity. The society’s relationships are globally determined by this system of exchange. Note: Hetty Nooy-Palm translates pembalikan using the English term ‘conversion’ as ‘means of restoring relations with the gods of the world above’ (Nooy-Palm 1986: 152-153). (anglais)

“Aturan peralihan” (aluk pembalikan) mendukung seluruh sistem sosio-religius yang dinamikanya tampil dalam bentuk peralihan dari rampe matampu’ (“di sebelah matahari terbenam”) ke rampe matallo (“di sebelah matahari terbit”). Sasaran utama dari aluk pembalikan adalah pengembalian sumbangan dari mereka yang telah meninggal kepada mereka yang masih hidup: yang masih hidup memberi makanan kepada mereka yang telah meninggal; sebagai imbalannya, mereka yang telah meninggal memberikan perlindungan dan kesuburan kepada mereka yang masih hidup. Hubungan sosial secara global ditentukan oleh sistem pertukaran ini.
