The sandalwood (sendana bonga) of the East has as a counterpart, in the West, the white-hearted sandalwood. ‘During a rite of the ma'tomatua, the sendana dongka is planted, a variety of sandalwood tree differing from the heavenly sendana. This tree has no red heart-wood, like the sendana bonga; the heart-wood is whitish instead’ (Nooy-Palm 1979: 221).
