The ‘turning the drum around ‘ (pembalikan gandang), can take place some considerable time after the great funeral. This constitutes the final funeral rite that consecrates the transformation of the deceased’s soul into divinity by a simple drum stroke together with the sacrifice of a pig on the sacrificial field. The drum itself is not ‘turned around’; rather the deceased’s soul changes direction, passing from the south to the north, so as to be transformed into divinity (mendeata) (Waterson 1993: 74).
