Le rituel consiste à « retourner » l’ombre d’un défunt vers le soleil levant pour le convertir en énergie vitale. Il peut avoir lieu un à dix ans après le rite funéraire. Il consacre la libération finale de l’ombre du défunt et son entrée dans le monde des êtres divins par le retournement d’un mât cérémoniel. C’est à la fois un rite de purification et un rite de passage. « Le mât qui renverse celui du mort » (bate umpabalik bandera to mate) correspond au mât funéraire érigé lors de la première fête funéraire.

The ritual consists of ‘turning around’ the deceased's shade towards the rising sun in order to convert it into vital energy. It can take place one to ten years after the funeral rite. It consecrates the final liberation of the deceased's shade and its entrance into the world of divine beings through the inversion of the mast (maro bate ma’pabalik). It is a rite of both purification and passage. ‘The mast that overturns that of death’ (bate umpabalik bandera to mate) corresponds to the funeral mast erected for the first funeral celebration. Ritus ini berfungsi untuk “mengalihkan” roh seorang mendiang ke wilayah terbitnya matahari dalam bentuk energi vital. Hal ini dapat dilaksanakan antara satu sampai sepuluh tahun sesudah ritus pemakaman. Ritus ini merayakan pembebasan terakhir roh seorang mendiang dan penerimaannya dalam dunia para dewa, ritus yang ditandai dengan dibaliknya bendera seremonial. Pada waktu yang bersamaan, upacara ini merupakan ritus, baik pemurnian, maupun peralihan. “Bendera yang membalik bendera orang mati” (bate umpabalik bendera to mate) berkaitan dengan bendera pemakaman yang didirikan pada awal pesta kematian.
