Two types of burake exist. In the south, the burake tambolang (‘white heron’) which is a transvestite, in the north, the burake tattiku' (‘little bird of the mountains’), man or woman. The first acquires his title by nature, the second inherits it. Today, the first type has disappeared. Burake may mean ‘impotent’ or ‘hermaphrodite’ (Nooy-Palm 1979: 282). He/she officiated in the agrarian rituals (menani pare) and/or in the bua’ kasalle. His status diminished throughout the century due to the disappearance of the rituals of the East. (anglais)
