The traditional houses of the Austronesian world possess a vitality of their own, depending on the vitality of their occupants and the objects they contain (Waterson 1991: 115). Considered a real living structure endowed with a vital energy, the house is sung and celebrated, and – just like a human being – undergoes rites of passage.

Les maisons traditionnelles du monde austronésien possèdent une vitalité propre, dépendante de la vitalité de leurs occupants et des objets qu’elles contiennent (Waterson 1991 : 115). Véritable structure vivante dotée d’une énergie vitale, la maison est chantée et fêtée, et tout comme un être humain, subit des rites de passage. (French)

Rumah adat dari wilayah Austronesia memiliki suatu vitalitas tersendiri, yang terlepas dari vitalitas para penghuni, serta benda-benda yang tersimpan di dalamnya (Waterson 1991: 115). Yang benar-benar memiliki struktur yang hidup dengan sebuah energi vital (sumanga’), rumahnya dinyanyikan dan dipestakan.
