The mortician is called to mebalun ‘he who wraps’ to burake bombo (‘officiant of the shade’) or to burake matampu’ (‘officiant of the setting sun’) (Nooy Palm 1979: 280). Descended from a slave, he is on the margins of society, lives in isolation and has the right to attend only funeral rituals. This function was effected by a slave in the south of the Toraja country. He is the most important officiant at the first funeral celebration after which, at the second celebration, he yields his place to the to minaa.

Le thanatopracteur est appelé to mebalun « celui qui enveloppe » ou encore to burake bombo (« officiant de l’ombre ») ou to burake matampu’ (« officiant du soleil couchant ») (Nooy Palm 1979 : 280). Descendant d’esclave, il est en retrait du groupe social, habite un endroit isolé et n’a le droit d’assister à aucun rituel autre que les funérailles. Dans le Sud du pays toraja, cette fonction était assurée par un esclave. Il est l’officiant le plus important des premières funérailles puis, lors des secondes funérailles, il cède sa place au to minaa. (French)

“Sang pembalut jenazah” ini disebut to mebalun, atau to burake bombo (“pemangku adat jiwa orang mati”), ataupun to burake matampu’ (“pemangku adat mentari terbenam”) (Nooy-Palm, 1979: 280). Dari keturunan hamba, ia hidup menjauh dari kelompok sosial, hidup di suatu wilayah yang terasing, dan dilarang mengikuti kegiatan ritual, kecuali untuk upacara duka. Hanya pada bagian selatan Toraja, fungsi ini dilaksanakan oleh hamba.
