The difficulty in defining the Toraja group arises for historical, linguistic and cultural reasons. In general, the population of the upper basin of the Sa'dan has been comprehensively studied. From the end of the nineteenth century N. Adriani and A. Kruijt began using the name ‘Toraja’ instead of ‘Alfuru’ – a name given to every highlander who was still ‘pagan’ – in order to remove the negative connotation accorded the latter. At the end of the nineteenth century, the name ‘Toraja’ was widely used to designate the highlanders of Central Sulawesi and the inhabitants of northern South Sulawesi. Nowadays, as a result of linguistic research, the word ‘Toraja’ is more accurately defined. (anglais)
