At the funerals I attended (October 1993 and May 2000), the mortician, about fifty years old, was called on for the second day of the celebration. This man, gloomy and always busy, is not very approachable. His role is to attend to the deceased and the widow or widower. His tasks are many: he rolls up the corpse and feeds it, constructs all types of objects, has the widow(er) undergo the rites of passage, and must sacrifice a large number of piglets which he cooks as a gift to the deceased.

Dans les funérailles auxquelles j’ai assisté (octobre 1993 et mai 2000), le thanatopracteur, d’une cinquantaine d’années, fut appelé le deuxième jour des funérailles. Cet homme, sombre et toujours occupé, est difficile à aborder. Il a pour fonction de s’occuper du défunt et du veuf ou de la veuve. Ses tâches sont multiples : il enroule le mort dans des tissus, lui donne à manger, confectionne toutes sortes d’objets, fait subir au veuf les rites de passage et sacrifie un grand nombre de porcelets qu’il cuisine comme don au défunt. Dalam berbagai upacara pemakaman yang sempat saya hadiri (Oktober 1993 – 2000), thanatopracteur, yang berumur sekitar lima puluhan tahun, kemudian dipanggil pada hari kedua upacara tersebut. Orang yang murung dan selalu sibuk itu, sulit diajak bicara. Ia bertugas untuk mengurus mendiang dan jandanya. Tugasnya banyak: membungkus jenazah, memberinya makan, membuat segala macam benda, melaksanakan ritus peralihan pada sang janda, dan harus mengorbankan sejumlah besar babi kecil, yang kemudian ia persembahkan pada sang mendiang.
