Public

Each of the five houses erects its ceremonial trident mast (bate) on which precious cloths are fixed. The masts are of two types: the ‘mast that turns around’ (bate ma’pabalik) converts the deceased's shade into vital energy; the ‘descended mast’ (bate manurun) allows the subsequent bua’ ritual to be held. In both cases, this is a symbol of pride, honor, and membership in a rapu (stem family). Each erection requires two pigs to be sacrificed and the gellu’ dance to be performed. First planted in the courtyard of the house, the masts are then taken to the ceremonial site ‘market’ (pasa').

(Indonesian)
