Its size is reduced: although the dimensions of the lutes vary from one group to the other, on average the instrument measures between 80 and 90 cm (about 2 ft 6 inches to 3 ft). Whereas its neck resembles an oar, the other side recalls the gables of Bugis or Toraja houses, which are also shaped like a boat or upturned saddle. In its original form the instrument’s neck and body were made from the same piece of wood. A resonant cavity is left open at the back, to be closed with a separate wooden board in which three holes have been pierced. In the south of Sulawesi, all the plucked lutes have two strings.

Alors que le manche évoque la rame, la tête du luth rappelle les pignons de maisons bugis ou toraja qui sont aussi en forme de bateau ou de selle retournée. Dans sa forme originelle, le corps et le manche de l’instrument sont faits dans la même pièce de bois.
