At the maro ritual, the drum has both a ritual and a musical role: covered with a mixture of animal blood (mangrara gandang), it is ‘blooded with three bloods’ (ditallung rarai) from different animals. Several drums are used, one for each house to be consecrated. One drum from every house taking part is taken down to the ceremonial field on the sixth day of celebration; beaten by several players, it makes the gellu’ dancers dance. For each drum there is a corresponding group of dancers and a ceremonial mast, consecrated by a song gelong bate performed by different groups of officiants for each mast.

Lors du maro, le tambour possède à la fois une fonction rituelle et une fonction musicale : recouvert du mélange de sang animal (mangrara gandang), il est « ensanglanté par trois sangs » (ditallung rarai) d’animaux différents. Plusieurs tambours sont utilisés, un pour chaque maison consacrée. Attribut d’une famille, chaque tambour de chaque maison participante est descendu le sixième jour de fête sur le champ cérémoniel ; là, frappé par plusieurs joueurs, il fait danser les danseuses de gellu’. À chaque tambour correspond un groupe de danseuses, un mât cérémoniel consacré par le chant gelong bate, mené par différents groupes d’officiants. (French)

Pada ritus penyucian diri maro, gendang memiliki fungsi ritual dan sekaligus fungsi musikal: ditutupi dengan campuran darah binatang (mangrara gandang), gendang tersebut “dilumuri oleh tiga darah” (ditallung rarai) binatang-binatang yang berbeda. Beberapa gendang dipakai, satu untuk setiap rumah yang dipersembahkan. Sebagai ciri khas sebuah percabangan keluarga, setiap gendang dari setiap rumah yang ikut serta, diturunkan pada hari keenam pesta ke lapangan upacara. Di sana, dengan ditabuh oleh beberapa pemain, gendang itu mengiringi tarian para penari gellu’. Setiap gendang berhubungan dengan sekelompok penari perempuan, sebuah bendera upacara yang dipersembahkan melalui sebuah lagu gelong bate dan dilakukan oleh berbagai kelompok pemangku adat untuk setiap bendera.
