The Toraja classify their musical instruments solely according to the rituals in which they appear. After the name of the instrument, they add deata (‘divinity’) to indicate whether the instrument is used in the rituals of the East or of the West. In the East, they speak of suling deata (‘flutes of the divinities’) or gandang deata (‘drums of the divinities’). (anglais)
