Public

Various forms of music greet the guests’ progress through the area of celebration. These musics come one after the other, piled on top of one another through overlapping only a few meters apart. The intensity of the mortar covers the long sighs of the elegiac complaint marakka, sad and insistent, musically close to weeping; the women’s short melodies, plain and static, of the chorus katia mingle with the powerful accents of the male badong, ceaselessly scrambled by the master of ceremonies’ badly adjusted megaphone. Mixture of registers, of timbres, and of rhythms.

(Indonesian)

Lines of guests at Tallung Lipu, 1993. The presents are placed on the ground. Superposition of sounds of the rice mortar, squealing pigs, and megaphone during a funeral at Tallung Lipu, 1993. From the moment a group of guests arrives at the gate, the rice mortar, fifty meters away, is pounded by eight women. Gift of the guests to the family, the tethered pigs, squealing non-stop, are first of all brought in and placed in the ceremonial field, their cries joining the sound of the mortar in a deafening din., Cortèges d'invitées à Tallung Lipu, 1993. (Indonesian)
