The plucked lute kacapi of South Sulawesi is distinguished from all the other lutes of the archipelago (except Sumba) by its finger-posts (between four and six) carved on the neck and resembling little pillars measuring between 3 and 7 cm. In Toraja country, the lute katapi, probably an import, only exists residually. In addition, it is not known if it ever had its moment of glory. It is not mentioned in the musicologists’ first descriptions (Cf. Kunst 1946/1994: 182-183), nor in the great Toraja ritual words, otherwise so rich in allusions to musical instruments.

Le luth kacapi de Sulawesi-Sud se distingue de tous les autres luths de l’archipel (excepté Sumba) par ses repose-doigts (entre quatre et six) sculptés sur le manche, ressemblant à des petits piliers qui mesurent entre 3 et 7 cm. Autrefois, le luth bugis était sculpté. En pays toraja, le luth katapi, probablement exogène, n’existe plus aujourd’hui que de façon résiduelle. D’ailleurs, personne ne peut affirmer qu’il ait eu son heure de gloire. Il n’est mentionné ni dans les premières descriptions de musicologues (voir Kunst 1946/1994 : 182-183) ni dans les grandes paroles rituelles toraja pourtant riches en mention d’instruments de musique. Lut kacapi dari Sulawesi Selatan berbeda dengan semua lut lainnya di Nusantara (kecuali Sumba) karena tempat jarinya (antara empat sampai enam) yang diukir di gagang, dan mirip dengan tiang-tiang kecil antara 3 sampai 7 cm. Dahulu lut Bugis diukir. Di negeri Toraja, lut katapi yang mungkin berasal dari luar, tidak ada lagi saat ini kecuali tinggal sisa-sisanya saja. Lagipula, tak ada yang dapat memastikan seberapa banyak alat musik ini pernah digunakan. Lut tak disebutkan dalam penggambaran-penggambaran awal para ahli musik (Lihat: Kunst 1946/1994:182-183), juga dalam syair-syair besar ritus-ritus Toraja, padahal ritus-ritus begitu kaya menyebutkan alat-alat musik.
