Le gandang est cylindrique, en bois de fer uru (Michelia celebica ) ou karurung « cœur du bois du palmier » (Borassus). Il possède deux membranes qui sont cloutées. Il est associé à la récolte du vin de palme : pour récupérer le vin de palme (tuak, ballo), il faut frapper sur le tronc du palmier à sucre induk (Arenga pinnata). Le tambour est aussi fabriqué avec le bois des vieux arbres à vin. Hors rituel, il reste suspendu au grenier à riz ou aux maisons. Quand il est joué, il est posé à terre et son déplacement donne lieu à des sacrifices. Il n’est pas accordé.

The double-headed drum (gandang) with two buffalo-skin membranes, is cylindrical, with nailed heads; it is made from wood, either uru (Michelia celebica) or karurung ‘inside the palm’ (Borassus). It is associated with the palm wine harvest: the trunk of the induk tree (arenga pinnata) must be tapped to obtain palm wine (tuak, ballo’). The drum is thus also made from old wine trees. It is kept hanging in the rice granary or house and is used only in rituals. When it is played it is placed on the ground, and its movement indicates occasions for sacrifices. It is not tuned. Gandang memiliki dua selaput dari kulit kerbau, berbentuk silinder, dipaku, dari kayu Michelia celebica (uru) atau kayu karurung “di dalam palem”. Gendang ini diikutsertakan dalam panen tuak. Untuk mengambil tuak, ballo, orang harus memukul pada pohon induk (Arenga saccharifera). Jadi, gendang juga dibuat dari kayu pohon-pohon enau yang tua. Di luar ritus, gendang digantungkan pada lumbung padi atau di rumah-rumah. Apabila dimainkan, gendang diletakkan di tanah dan pemindahannya harus dilakukan dengan pemberian sajen.
