[B.2.4] Chants courtois dans les rizières, [B.2.4] Lagu-lagu sopan-santun di sawah (indonésien), [B.2.4] Court songs in ricefields (anglais)

Public

In Mamasa, polyphonic songs performed while weeding paddy fields. In former times, in this area, men would come down bringing areca nuts and place them in front of the women, who sang io-io (“yes, yes”) as they tried to catch them. This game, intended to increase the fertility of the paddy, used to end with mutual embraces, a fall in the muddy water and then a night-time rendezvous. It was later prohibited by Christian authorities. (anglais)
