Le gong est réservé aux funérailles les plus élaborées. Alors que dans le Nord du pays, le gong peut être frappé si sept buffles sont sacrifiés, dans le Sud, cela n’est possible qu’à partir de vingt quatre buffles. Dans l’échelle de valeurs, le gong constitue l’attribut le plus élevé, réservé à la haute noblesse. On dit que le mort est « gongué » (dibombonganni tu tau). Chaque village possède un seul gong.
