PublicThe dance joge’ is widespread in Indonesia. The term comes from the word joged designating a dance that is part of the Malay cultural heritage. It is still commonly employed by various languages and in all the islands of Indonesia, but refers to different realities in every case. In Indonesian, joged nowadays means ‘dance to variety music’. See Yampolsky 1996, Music of Indonesia vol. 11. For joge’ in Sulawesi, see Kaudern 1929: 474-477; Holt 1939: 89-93, Kennedy 1953: 103,104. Bugis joge’ and jaga have been filmed by Rolf de Maré (1938). In the film (Reel 102 preserved at Stockholm), two types of joge’ are presented: the joge’ filmed at Sengkang performed by two transvestites (wandu), with chignon and fan, and the joge’ filmed at Pampanua (south of Sengkang) performed by twelve girls to the sound of drums.
VoirYampolsky 1996, Music of Indonesia, vol. 11. (Indonesian)
