Buffalo and bird heads are carved in wood (arae, katik) on the façades of some houses. The buffalo head is linked to the West and the head of the katik to the East. The buffalo’s head on the house indicates that the highest funeral has been performed, and the katik’s that the highest ritual of the East (bua’ kasalle) has been performed (Waterson 1989: 61): these indicate that the houses have completed their ritual cycles. The bua’ kasalle palanquins are decorated with long-necked-katik birds. Afterwards, these carvings will be attached to the house.

Sur les façades de certaines maisons sont sculptées des têtes de buffles et de volatiles. La tête de buffle. La présence du buffle (tedong) indique qu’une cérémonie du plus haut niveau a eu lieu du côté du Couchant ; la présence du volatile (katik) montre que la plus haute cérémonie du Levant (bua’ kasalle) a eu lieu – signes que les maisons ont achevé leurs cycles rituels (Waterson 1989 : 61). Les palanquins du bua’ kasalle sont décorés de katik, oiseaux à long cou. Ces sculptures seront attachées ensuite à la maison. (French)

Pada bagian depan rumah tertentu, dipasang pahatan kepala kerbau yang terbuat dari kayu dan kepala burung-burung (area, katik). Kepala kerbau berkaitan dengan aluk rampe matampu’ dan kepala katik dengan aluk rampe matallo. Keberadaan patung kepala kerbau di depan rumah merupakan tanda bahwa sebuah upacara yang paling tinggi dari aluk rampe matampu’ telah dilaksanakan; sedangkan kepala katik menandai bahwa ritus tertinggi (bua’) dari aluk rampe matallo telah terlaksana pula (Waterson, 1989: 61). Kesemuanya ini merupakan tanda bahwa rumah-rumah ini telah melaksanakan siklus ritual mereka. Tandu-tandu yang digunakan dalam ritus bua’ dihiasi kepala katik, burung berleher panjang.
