The celebration opens with the drums entering the house (‘bringing the drums inside’ ma'patama gandang): the drums are transported from the rice granary to the house, where they are played by the officiants (to minaa): placed on the ground, they are beaten by four drummers with a lath. Before being struck the drum(s) are consecrated with the blood of animals: a chicken and a pig are killed and a part of the meat put on the drums, as offerings to the deata, after which the drums may be beaten for two days. They are used to invoke the gods, chase away the evil spirits and purify the atmosphere. In every case, the drum’s entry and exit from the house are occasions for sacrifices – the meat will be placed on the drum and then offered to the divinities. (From H. Nooy-Palm 1986: 25, 64, 66, 75.)

Hetty Nooy-Palm (1986: 25, 64, 66, 75).
